Dentures are one of the most popular and reliable ways to regain your full bite after the effects of tooth loss. While they can last a long time with proper care, you’ll need to replace them eventually. When are you supposed to get new ones? Speaking with your dentist is perhaps the surest way to know for sure when to schedule replacements. Otherwise, here are a few indications that you’ll want to get new prosthetics.

#1: Ill-Fitting Dentures

Whether you’ve undergone tooth extraction or lost your teeth by other means, the size and shape of your jawbone will typically change due to the lack of stimulation in the bone tissue. Dentures can help reduce or prevent dental shifting from tooth loss, but your mouth can also alter in a way that makes your prosthetics not fit as well as before. If you notice your dentures are moving out of place when chewing/speaking or you require more adhesive than normal to support them, they might be ill-fitting and will require replacements.

#2: Discomfort When Wearing Your Dentures

Your dental team will meticulously construct your prosthetics so that they fit your mouth perfectly enough to feel like you have your natural pearly whites again. Your new teeth will also be fabricated out of high-quality materials that are smooth and natural-feeling. This means that your dentures should never be uncomfortable or painful to wear. If you’re experiencing discomfort with your prosthetics, you can save yourself trouble by either repairing or replacing them.

#3: Heavily Stained Dentures

Over time, your dentures can become discolored or stained due to various reasons. These may include consuming dark-colored beverages/drinks too often or smoking tobacco. While some stains can be removed through polishing from your dental team, more severe discoloration is often challenging to eliminate. In these cases, it might be more beneficial to simply get new dentures.

#4: Your Dentures Are Damaged

If you notice any missing teeth or visible signs of damage, then you’ll need to either get your prosthetics repaired or replaced depending on the severity of the issue. Continuing to wear your damaged dentures can place your soft oral tissues at risk of injury. Some chips or cracks might be reparable, but if it’s beyond repair, it’ll be better to get new ones.

Remember that dentures aren’t meant to last forever. If you notice any of the above signs that your prosthetic isn’t working like before, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your dentist so they can help you return to enjoying a comfortable bite.
